ARKADY SHILKOPER AND “KRUGLYI BAND” PLAY MUSIC BY YURI MARKIN AT HIS MUSICAL SOIREE
Musical soiree of a prominent Russian composer and pianist Yuri Markin.
The concert program consists of his compositions, in which he develops principles of large form.
The higher musical education Yuri Markin has got at the composer faculty of Moscow Conservatory in Rodion Schedrin’s class. Already in 60-s he became famous as a jazzman due to the ensemble which was one of the first in the USSR to play free jazz; this is the membership that included Alexey Kozlov and Alexander Pischikov with Yuri Markin playing contrabass and Vladimir Vasilkov playing drums.
Since that time Markin has been working fruitfully on the junction of academical music and jazz. His jazz operas are well-known (based on “Master and Margaret”, on “Persecutor”) and interpretations of classic composers – Tchaikovsky, Borodin, Rakhmaninov, Chopin, Biset and others. Yuri Markin for a long time has been a teacher; he is the author of many training aids and of his own system on improvisation work.
On April 7 the band under the direction of a son of one of his students will enter the Club stage; we are speaking about Alexey Kruglov, the director of “Kruglyi Band”, one of the leaders of Russian new jazz scene, a son of Vladimir Kruglov who was a student of Markin in late70-s – early 80-s in Electrostal College. However, Alexey is also a student of Yuri Ivanovich: Kruglov jr. studied his scores, and when studying in the College in Ordynka street in the mid 90-s he performed with Markin in his quintet.
Several years ago Alexey and Yuri Ivanovich have revived their mutual work… and here is a new project – “Kruglyi Band” plays new music by Markin, which is built on the basis of large form!
On April 7 “Kruglyi Band” will enter the stage in the extended membership, specifically:
Trumpets: Salman Abuev, Rostislav Kochetov, Anton Zakharov, Maxim Durov, Vitaly Anisimov;
Trombones: Fedor Senchukov, Andrey Savelichev, Vyacheslav Keizerov;
Tuba: Andrey Bashev
Saxophones: Alexey Kruglov, Olga Sorokina, Oleg Grymov, Anton Kotikov, Georgy Gorbov;
Rhythm section: Alexey Nadzharov (piano), Denis Shushkov (contrabass), Piotr Ivshin (drums)
A special guest will also take part in the concert – aprominent musician Arkady Shilkoper, who is bounded with Yuri Ivanovich with common work on different projects. Three large compositions by Markin will be performed:
Concertino for French horn, solo – Arkady Shilkoper;
Concerto for piano, solo – Alexey Nadzharov;
Concerto for trumpet (dedication to Eugeny Savin), solo – Salman Abuev and Rostislav Kochetov
